The first version of the Gear VR hardware from Samsung and Oculus, released earlier this year, was aimed at developers and enthusiasts, but at Oculus Connect today, Samsung’s VP of Mobile Peter Koo announced a new Gear VR priced affordably at $99 aimed at, well, everyone. The new headset will be ready to ship in the United States in time for Black Friday this November and worldwide shortly after. Koo said that the latest Gear VR will work with Samsung’s whole 2015 line of smartphones — previous editions worked with either the Galaxy S6 or the Note 4.
The new Gear VR looks a lot like its most recent iteration, with the exception of a redesigned trackpad, which has a D-pad-style cross that could make it easier to feel when you’re in VR. The new Gear VR is also 22% lighter, which Koo said makes it more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Part of today’s news is also the amount of new content that’s coming out over the coming months — including Netflix, TiVo, and Twitch.
